Background
Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) is a type of hot mix asphalt (HMA) consisting of a highly coarse aggregate that interlocks to form a stone skeleton that resists deformation. SMA is used extensively worldwide as an asphalt surfacing option for highly or heavily trafficked road systems.
The voids in the aggregate are filled with a mastic of Bitumen & filler to which cellulosic fibers are added to provide adequate stability of the Bitumen & to prevent drain down of the asphalt cement during transport & placement. Unfortunately the use of fibers requires higher concentrations of asphalt cement & higher temperatures.
iBind is a finely ground natural mineral which when activated by DSI's patented process can perform the same function as fibers using less asphalt cement & lower temperatures. In addition, iBind also imparts greater structural qualities to the SMA mix which improves rutting & fatigue resistance.
